Student Wellbeing and Engagement

At Mother of God School, every child is known by name, need and background. Our home visits at the start of each year support staff to build strong relationships with students and families. Knowing students well helps us to create a consistent and supportive environment where children feel safe and ready to learn.

At Mother of God we recognise that wellbeing and learning are closely connected. Students need to feel calm, supported and regulated to engage successfully in the classroom. Our explicit Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) program is taught weekly and supports students in developing emotional regulation, building positive relationships and managing challenges. In addition to this, we provide targeted social skills groups for students who need a little more support .

Our approach is whole school, structured and proactive. We promote clear expectations for behaviour, grounded in our school values, and consistently acknowledge and reinforce these in everyday interactions. When challenges arise, staff work with students to reflect, repair and make better choices. Staff also work closely together to monitor student wellbeing and respond early when support is needed, including through small group interventions, play plans and ongoing communication with families.

Grounded in our Catholic values, we focus on respect, responsibility and inclusion, supporting each student’s social, emotional and spiritual development.

At Mother of God School, wellbeing and learning go hand in hand, with a clear focus on supporting every child to feel ready to learn and able to succeed.
